The book is a comprehensive account of the field of Indian science fiction. It traces the genealogy of the genre from its beginning in 1884-88, with writers like Pandit Ambika Dutt Vyas’ “Aascharya Vrittant” and “Chandra Lok Ki Yatra” (Journey to the Moon) by Keshav Prasad Singh. These inspired works such as Durga Prasad Khatri, Rahul Sankrityayan leading to works which contains more uase of science like “Aascharya Janak Ghanti.” A number of magazines contributed to the field but the first major leap in Indian science fiction came in with the decade of sixties when Indian science fiction was truly shaped by two prominent writers like Yamuna Datt Vaishnav and Dr. Naval Bihari Mishra. The modern era begins from 1979 with writers like Devendra Mewari, Harish Goyal, Dr.Rajeev Ranjan Upadhyay and Dr.Arvind Mishra. A new wave of SF writers appeared during late 1990’s with the advent of Indian Science Fiction Writers Association in Faizabad, and they are still actively contributing to the genre. The encyclopaedia contains short entries on each topic pertaining to the scope of the genre of Indian science fiction, its debated origin and use of myths, various themes present, leading up to modern writers which integrated science and scientific principles apart from fantasy into its fabric.
